For nearly a century, U.S. Highway 89 has served as the backbone for the state, connecting the Bear River Mountains along the Idaho border to Red Rock Country in Southern Utah. Along the way, the road winds through rural farming communities and the heart of urban neighborhoods through the Wasatch Front. Utah Heritage Highway 89 is an adventure through scenic beauty and living history.
Photographer Benjamin Zack’s photo essay, Along 89, documents the people and communities found along Utah Heritage Highway 89. As we travel in this photographic journey, Zack encourages us to consider the variety of lifestyles, landscapes, and people living in this 250-mile portion of the renowned road.
Along 89 was commissioned as part of the Thrive125 project, which encouraged artists to consider Utah’s anniversary of statehood and the people who have shaped Utah during its past 125 years. The project is a recent acquisition of the State of Utah Alice Merrill Horne Art Collection.
The show is on display at our Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts in Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park.
Benjamin Zack is a photojournalist living in Ogden, Utah. Zack’s work has been featured in publications around the world and has been recognized with a range of local and national awards. Zack received first place in Utah’s contest for Best Multimedia Journalist from the Society of Professional Journalists and, in 2020, was named Photographer of the Year by the Utah News Photographer Association.
